Explore Plan d'Aups Sainte Baume

Located in the heart of the verdant countryside of the Sainte Baume massif, Plan d'Aups Sainte Baume is blessed with a natural and historical heritage. This small typical village of Provence is characterized by its 11th century Romanesque church and the famous natural cave dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. The place was an important pilgrimage destination in France.

The supernatural and mystical beauty of the site certainly cannot disappoint you. This small village in the Provence Verte region enjoys an exceptional weather combining Mediterranean mildness and mountain freshness. The Plan d'Aups is located on a plateau (hence the name Plan d'Aups) at 700 m altitude with the imposing crest of the Sainte Baume on the horizon. The massif is one of France's most beautiful forests. It is a "relict forest" which contains specimens of a very rare diversity, as well as an exceptional flora. The Sainte Baume reminds us of its Aix sister La Sainte Victoire.

Religious tradition

The Sainte Baume has an international reputation, since according to religious tradition, Mary Magdalene died praying in a cave.

The Hôtellerie de la Sainte Baume is located at the bottom of the massif. At a 45-minute walk from the cave, it is still managed by the Dominicans who historically are responsible for its material and spiritual animation. All year round, they welcome pilgrims, of course, but also tourists and hikers. The brothers provide accommodation and meals and tell the local story.

Far from the hustle and bustle of big cities, Plan d'Aups Sainte Baume offers you a unique experience that is ideal both for resting and for meditation. The sumptuous landscapes of the Sainte Baume massif will definitely please you. You can take advantage of your visit to discover the surrounding Provençal villages.
