The Castle of Les Baux de Provence

Starting with the most monumental and famous of these remains: the Château des Baux. Located on the top of a rocky peak, this fortified town was of major strategic importance throughout history. The fortress was attacked several times. The solid keep still standing in the center of the castle is a powerful reminder of its importance. Standing on the rocky spur of Les Baux, it provided an effective natural protection with steep escarpments from 20 to 45 meters high. In addition, the defensive system was completed with a series of small forts with guards for the plain's protection.

From the castle, the panorama is breathtaking over the entire valley. As a special bonus, reconstructions of siege machines from the time are on display. Two medieval machines are thus reproduced identically according to the techniques used by medieval engineers. Thus you will be able to discover a magnificent trebuchet, a redoubtable wall destroyer. Powerful and precise, it was able to demolish walls with a range of more than 200 meters. The pendulum system had the capacity to propel rocks from 50 to 100 kg. With a weight of more than seven tons, the machine required the presence of 60 troops to operate. This is one of the most popular tourist spots in the area, no matter the season, so be prepared not to be alone! Remember to take your tickets at the ticket office to avoid long queues!
