The Pastorale hike

If you visit Marseille, among the many hikes in Provence, the Pastorale is the perfect mix between nature and our Provençal heritage. The difficulty of this tour is moderate and the duration is about 2h30. Throughout this 5 km hike, you will have a great time in front of the bancau or restanques. These dry-stone walls were used to build agricultural terraces in steep terrain to prevent rainwater runoff and encourage ploughing and harvesting. The hiking trail also crosses many bories, small dry stone shelters that served as refuges and sheds by the shepherds. You can stop at the Pavillon du Bailli de Suffren. This building was the hunting lodge of Pierre-André de Suffren, Vice-Admiral of France and one of the most famous sailors of the Louis XV and Louis XVI era. Interesting fact: the house has a corner mullioned window. You will also pass in front of a 17th century Pastoral Farm, but be careful because visitors are not allowed to enter. Many tables are spread out along the way so you can have a picnic, comfortably seated before resuming your hike. Finally, at the top of the hill, the observation table will explain the surrounding panorama. You can also take beautiful pictures. It is also possible to do this hike by bike. But beware, this route is quite difficult. But if you are sporty and want to take up the challenge, think about renting a mountain bike! If you like to explore the paths of Provence, you can discover our hiking suggestions. Be careful, however, some tours require the rental of hiking equipment.
