Barjols, a Provençal village

Barjols, situated in the Provence Verte, is ideally located between Verdon and the Mediterranean sea. It is surrounded by the sea and hills.

History of the village

In the Middle Ages, the Templars owned an establishment known as the Chemin or Bastide de Fontanis.

This former Roman institution developed around its church before becoming the residence of the Counts of Provence in the 14th century.

In the 19th century, Barjols became the French tannery capital with its 24 tanneries and 19 tan mills. These ones only disappeared in the 1960s. These large buildings are now used as residences for a large community of artists.

Like most Provençal villages, Barjols' heritage is as rich as it is varied, with the 11th century Collegiate Church, the Carmelite waterfall, the leather festival and the Tripettes festival. The Tourist Office also offers a fountain tour.

Its 28 fountains, 14 washhouses and numerous waterways gave it the nickname of Tivoli of Provence. You can walk through the city, and discover the fountains and their stories.

The Vallon des Carmes, accessible from the top of the village, is a popular swimming spot for families.
